What is the
Great Hawaiian Rubber Duckie Race?
The Rubber Duckie
Race made its first United States debut on March 5, 1988, on the
Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu. The concept was borrowed from Canada,
with the Ala Wai making the perfect course for the 1st Great Hawaiian
Rubber Duckie Race. The canal provides just the right amount of
velocity of current to drift the rubber duckies along at a top
speed of approximately 2-mph. Our web-footed friends duck dive
into the Ala Wai Canal from the Kalakaua Avenue Bridge, and if
the winds are right, will finish the race in 15 to 20 minutes.
The first 50 lucky duckies that cross the finish line win their
adoptive parents one of many great prizes.
From 1988 to present, the Great Hawaiian Rubber Duckie Race has
developed a loyal group of followers that show up on the banks
of the Ala Wai each year to cheer on their favorite bathtub beauty.
Being supportive of this duckie derby not only provides the fans
a chance to win some great prizes, it additionally provides UCPA
of Hawaii the much needed funds to help continue the services offered
to consumers. The Child Development Center, Social Services and
Public Health Education are all programs that benefit from this
race. It is an event that brings out the word “fun” in fundraising.
